On May 1st, Thursday, local time, U.S. media reported that National Security Advisor Mike Pompeo is about to step down to become the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, leaving the position to be concurrently filled by Secretary of State Rubio. Pompeo's deputy Alex Wong will also be leaving; he assisted in arranging the summit between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and is one of the few senior officials with practical diplomatic experience in East Asia. U.S. President Trump's Middle East envoy, Whittaker, is considering replacing Mike Pompeo as National Security Advisor, but no decision has been made yet.
Trump's first term was characterized by frequent changes in senior leadership, but during his second term, he only made his first major personnel change after reaching 100 days in office. The National Security Council (NSC) is the core institution for formulating and coordinating security policies for U.S. presidents, and its members often discuss global hotspot conflicts.
