The fast finality of FIL has been launched! F3 is completely changing the FIL network.
The fast finality (F3) in FIL is about to enter the network, which will increase the network finality speed by 450 times. The finality period is the amount of time the Block must pass before it is considered completely immutable. With F3, the finality time is shortened from 7.5 hours (900 epochs) to a few minutes, improving user experience and opening doors for building applications, exchanges, and interoperability on the network.
Unlike other Blockchains, FIL is essentially a set of blockchains called tipsets, rather than a single blockchain. Because all valid blocks submitted in a given round are included in the consensus, the network benefits from efficiency and throughput improvements by merging all valid blocks in each round. This ensures incentives for block production, reduces centralization, and increases collaboration. In addition, EC allows for rapid convergence during fork periods because all blocks in tipsets share the same height and parent.
F3 represents one of the biggest improvements in storage-retrieval lifecycle, where new on-chain storage contracts of other networks can now interact with FIL. By reducing the confirmation period of FIL storage service events to improve network efficiency, F3 is a game-changing improvement for FIL builders.
This upgrade has created a faster environment for builders to develop more applications that require low latency, L2 subnets (such as Inter-Planetary Consensus (IPC)), smart contracts, chain bridges, and more functionality on the network. In addition to speed, F3 and its implementation GossiPBFT also provide an additional layer of resilience to the network.
GossiPBFT is a Byzantine fault tolerance Consensus protocol that provides typical properties of consistency, liveness, and termination. It is simple, leaderless, and designed with FIL network in mind, enabling it to withstand more powerful attacks and adversaries.
