Conformity is a way of escape adopted by most modern people. They abandon their individuality and make themselves like everyone else, trying to eliminate the distance between themselves and society, and to lessen feelings of loneliness and alienation. The crisis of the past turned people into slaves, while the crisis of the future will turn people into machines. People are like gears in a huge machine, operating in a routine manner, with no difference from all the other gears. The only consequence of this is an increasing sense of powerlessness, making it impossible to achieve true security.
