(4) Guiding Intent: Challenges and Prospects of Intelligent Web3 Interactions

In June, Paradigm first introduced the concept of Intent( to the public. Related protocols and infrastructure developed rapidly, becoming a hot topic in the crypto community at the ETHCC conference in July.

Intent is not a new concept. As Mindao, the founder of DForce, said: the crypto space has been engaging in extreme abstraction and automated operations, from aggregators, centralized exchanges, smart contract wallets to cross-chain DeFi, all of which are doing this work, along with Chainlink and the recent automated middleware, Telegram bots, etc.

But intention has brought new changes. In the past, the core was product interaction, while in the AGI era, the core is human-computer interaction, and AI/LLM contains tremendous potential to enhance encrypted interaction.

01, Top-down Anoma and Bottom-up Unibot

In the past six months, agreements, projects, and infrastructures related to intent have emerged one after another. Here, we will look at the overall situation through two typical cases.

Against the backdrop of severe homogenization in Layer 1, Anoma Foundation has raised a total of $57.8 million in three funding rounds with its intent-centric ) architecture, the Anoma ( full-stack Dapp architecture ), and the Namada ( privacy Layer 1), ranking 7th in funding amount among non-token issued Layer 1/Layer 2 projects.

Recalling Anoma's speech at EthCC, founder Adrian Brink stated that the magic of Anoma lies in: all interactions begin with intent, and the intent expressed by users is processed through Anoma's black box architecture, realizing the core process of intent-based interaction.

  • User Interaction: Users send transparent, private, or protected intentions to the Anoma black box architecture ( intent gossip layer ).
  • Intent collection and matching: The parser of the black box architecture collects intents, performs balance state transitions, and achieves counterparty matching.
  • Transaction Processing: Matched transactions are submitted to the cryptographic memory pool, and validators send the blocks packaged by proposers to the execution layer, completing execution and verification, and ultimately updating the state root.

The Anoma team has identified the pain points at the underlying layer of blockchain protocols and reviewed the architectural limitations from Bitcoin's scriptable settlement to Ethereum's programmable settlement. They believe that the intent-centric Anoma architecture is a third-generation Dapp architecture, allowing users to define the expected outcome state and achieve efficient and customizable privacy transactions at the intent level.

Currently built by a team of 37 interdisciplinary members from Heliax, although progress is slow, a complete innovative ecosystem has been formed:

  • Anoma: Intent-Centric Universal Dapp Architecture
  • Namada: The privacy settlement Layer1 of the Anoma ecosystem
  • AnomaVM: Simplifying DApp development on Anoma
  • Typhon: Improved consensus based on Cosmos
  • Taiga: Provides a composable privacy unified execution environment

Although many institutions are optimistic about Anoma's potential, this top-down approach has only laid a technical foundation so far, and there are no exciting practical applications yet.

In contrast, the Telegram Bot ( TG Bot ) has opened up the imagination for the implementation of Intent segmentation scenarios with on-chain automated trading tools. Unibot is a trading robot based on Telegram that allows users to conduct automated DEX trading through Telegram, offering features such as sniper buying, copy trading, DEX limit orders, privacy, and anti-MEV. Unibot simplifies the cumbersome interactions of Uniswap with Intent, providing a convenient DeFi experience. It has also spawned a batch of TG Bot clones, and the total market value of the TG Bot sector is currently close to 200 million USD.

Top-down Anoma is innovation, while bottom-up TG Bot is transformation. Both paths lead to the same goal, aiming to simplify user interaction experiences and introduce a new programmable and customizable user interaction interface - User Intent Layer ( 用户意图层 ), allowing users to bypass complex on-chain operations and define transaction status based on intent.

02. AI Becomes the New User Interface: Command Interaction vs Intent Interaction

AI is introducing the third paradigm of user interface in computer history, shifting to a new interaction mechanism where users tell the computer what they want, rather than how to do it.

  • Paradigm One: Batch Processing
  • Paradigm Two: Command-Based Interaction Design
  • Paradigm Three: Intent-Based Outcome Specifications

Every revolution in interaction patterns throughout history has led to entirely new business models. LLM-based generative AI has brought disruptive changes to human-computer interaction, directly transforming traditional software UI interactions into interactions with a Chatgpt chat window, which is an unprecedented experience. LLM + crypto brings a new proposition of intent-based interaction to the crypto world, where LLM has the potential to make blockchain interactions more intelligent by discovering and describing user intentions.

03. The Evolution of the Concept of Intent, Interaction Paradigms, Current Status and Trends

Intent is not a new concept; it has existed since the Web 2.0 era. With the rise of search engines like Google, users can input their intentions, and the search engines provide relevant results to meet their needs. The emergence of e-commerce platforms like Amazon and eBay has led to a significant transformation in intent-based architecture, allowing users to express their intent to purchase products while the platform handles the details. In 2017, Gartner officially introduced the concept of Intent-based Networking (, presenting users with an interface that only requires them to express their needs, while the platform manages the business details.

Intent-based networking is the trend of automation and intelligence in the Web2 era. Andrew Lerner, Vice President of Research at Gartner, pointed out in 2017 that it will be the next milestone in the networking field.

The concept of intent in Web3 is not clear, but there is some consensus:

  • Paradigm Definition: Intent is a set of declarative constraints that allow users to delegate the creation of transactions to a specialized network of third-party participants while retaining full control over the process.
  • Anoma Definition: Intent is a message sent by the user that expresses custom preferences, defining what the system can do, rather than a specific execution path.
  • Propellerheads definition: The intent is the part of the transaction that requires assistance from others, simplifying complex transactions by outsourcing difficult parts to third parties.

In Web3 intent-based transaction instances, users create intents off-chain, outsourcing to parsers, encapsulating the complexity of blockchain interactions while retaining full control over the process and lowering the barriers to on-chain interactions.

Intent also brings the LLM architecture concept - intent centric) architecture centered around user intent(. Currently, related encryption protocols and infrastructure are embedded in the interaction layer between users and cryptocurrency, leveraging LLM to provide a better on-chain interaction experience.

LLM+ encryption brings a new paradigm of human-machine interaction, allowing direct conversion of user intent into smart contract calls. Users only need to express their intentions as they would with Siri, while robots/AI agents/third-party parsers assist in completing complex on-chain operations. In the future, intent-based Web3 interaction intelligence has the potential to significantly reduce the complexity of user on-chain interactions.

More and more Web3 projects are exploring the power of intention. We categorize them into four main categories:

Infrastructure ) intent-centered architecture layer (:

  • DappOS
  • Flash 2.0 SUAVE
  • Anoma
  • Cow Protocol

Supporting facilities ) related to intent and account abstraction wallets infrastructure (:

  • ERC 4337
  • Account abstraction related: packaging infrastructure, wallet SDK
  • Intent-related: Juvix, Seaport, Gelato, etc.

Enterprise application ) integrating Dapp's intention infrastructure, API, modular intention layer, domain-specific parser (:

  • Trading Parser API: PropelleHeads
  • Intent API: EnsoFinance
  • Intention Trading Infrastructure: Bob the Solver, Brink
  • Composable Intent Tool: Essential

The intelligent interface for consumer applications ) user interaction includes wallets, DEX, Web3 AI agents, and smart search engines (:

  • Wallets: Safe, Bitconomy, Argent, etc.
  • DEX: CowSwap, Paraswap, Uniswap, etc.
  • Intelligent Frontend: Unibot, Dora, Web3 Analytics, etc.

![Behind the explosive success of TG Bot: Intention trading is knocking on the door of intelligent interaction in Web3])https://img-cdn.gateio.im/webp-social/moments-526e428a7d32b94b72e7975187aee8b4.webp(

The trends in the consumer application layer are the most exciting. Wallets, DEXs, and other interactive entry points are demonstrating the potential for intelligent interactions.

Wallet Intelligence: ERC-4337 introduces a new user intent layer )UserOps(, where users express their intent, and the bundler converts it into executable signed transactions. Recently, the number of ERC4337 users has significantly increased, with ZeroDev, Biconomy, and Safe modular smart accounts being the most motivated to drive AA+ intent, which may foster wallet intelligence in the future )SCW(.

DEX Architecture Transformation: Intent Based Trading ) aims to enhance capital efficiency and user experience. CoW Hooks link complex operations, while UniswapX allows users to sign intent for off-chain matching and on-chain settlement. An increasing number of DEXs and aggregators are shifting towards intent-based architecture, leading to a significant transformation in the DEX landscape.

Intelligent Interactive Entry: Similar to the transformation of Web3 front-end interfaces by TG Bot, the interactive entry focuses on understanding user intentions and converting them into automated tasks. It's not just TG Bot-like trading bots; Web3 AI agents and Web3 intelligent search engines are also making Web3 interactions more intelligent.

04. Challenges and Prospects of Intelligent Interaction in Web3

The interactive experience of Web3 products has indeed hindered widespread adoption. Currently, liquidity and user attention are fragmented, and on-chain liquidity is scarce. Although developers are enthusiastic about the intent-centric future, there are still many challenges to overcome for implementation.

  • Lack of relevant programming languages
  • Lack of suitable intent architecture
  • Lack of specific domain parser
  • Intention to achieve centralization and closure
  • Lack of frontend intent recognition parser
  • Lack of composable intent implementation
  • Intent Security Risk

But the outlook remains bright. With the emergence of relevant protocols, Web3 is expected to evolve into a more user-friendly smart interaction interface. Users can interact with mainstream applications in a one-stop manner, as simple as using Uber. This is the real opportunity for Web3 Dapps to surpass Web2 in terms of user experience.

More importantly, combining the visions of Anoma, Flashbots SUAVE, and DappOS, on-chain interactions in Web3 will become more intelligent, customizable, and fair. With intent-centered design, power will be returned to the users, allowing ordinary users to empower third parties to complete customized transactions, becoming the true captains of on-chain activities.

Looking forward to the future of smart interactions in Web3, whether it is account abstraction, chain abstraction, or intent, Web3 has finally started to pay attention to user experience. The dawn of intelligent interaction is about to illuminate this dark forest.
