Russia-Japan Tsunami Warning, Can Crypto Be an Alternative Settlement?
The Russian government has declared a state of emergency after a tsunami wave hit the coastline. Meanwhile, in Japan, evacuation has been ordered after a tsunami wave struck much of the country's coastal areas.
Even in times of emergency, community economic activities usually continue as normal, albeit with lower intensity. Therefore, the settlement system must be efficient and fast.
For example, when China is hit by floods, cellular base stations mounted on drones are deployed to keep communications ongoing. These drones are capable of providing communication services for a full day over an area of more than 50 square kilometers.
This technology promises wide connectivity, thereby reducing the risk of disruptions in payment system networks during emergencies. So what about Bitcoin?
Bitcoin transactions are direct and can be processed quickly. For example, after the Myanmar earthquake in March 2025, Bitcoin donations via the Lightning network successfully channeled funds rapidly, even though the internet and electricity were unstable.
"Crypto offers advantages over fiat, especially in emergencies. Transactions on the blockchain network can be settled in minutes, bypassing intermediaries that are crucial when time is of the essence to save lives," said Blockchain Expert Andy Lian.
However, this asset also has its weaknesses. Residents of Los Angeles fleeing from the wildfires have lost their hardware wallets and digital assets.
A 70-year-old unfortunate citizen lost the savings he kept in Bitcoin when the private key he wrote on paper was burned. Cash settlement is also no less risky as it can be completely lost if there is an urgent situation to leave it.
