OpenAI signs a $200 million contract with the U.S. Department of Defense
Gate News bot message, OpenAI has won a $200 million pilot project contract aimed at helping the U.S. Department of Defense determine how to use artificial intelligence (AI) for a range of administrative and security tasks.
The one-year contract disclosed by the U.S. Department of Defense on Monday is the latest initiative by the ChatGPT manufacturer to sell its technology to the U.S. government.
In a blog post on Monday, OpenAI stated that the contract is the first project undertaken by the company under a new entity called OpenAI for Government.
As part of this work, OpenAI will collaborate with the Department of Defense to study how AI can assist in administrative tasks, such as providing healthcare for U.S. soldiers and helping to prevent cyber attacks.
OpenAI for Government integrates all existing government projects of OpenAI into one domain of the company, including ChatGPT Gov (a version of ChatGPT tailored for government personnel) and collaborations with NASA, the National Institutes of Health, the Air Force Research Laboratory, and the Department of the Treasury.
The company also stated at the end of last year that it would collaborate with weapons manufacturer Anduril Industries Inc. to develop artificial intelligence for anti-drone systems, which again indicates its expanding cooperation with the U.S. government, particularly in the field of national security. In recent months, OpenAI has announced plans to build AI tools that uphold democratic values.
The AI startup has also hired a former senior official from the Pentagon to lead its national security policy team and has included a former director of the National Security Agency on its board.
